TEACHING PHILOSOPHYIn various ways, a teaching philosophy is consubstantial with one’s life philosophy. I believe one should go through life with a purpose to better oneself and others. I do not know a better way to do so than teaching. I believe that learning is interchangeable between student and teacher. However, as teachers we have the ability to give young people the most valuable tool they can have: education. I believe that compassion, meaningful practice, thoughtfulness, and cultural relevance can transcend an effective teacher.
Teachers should challenge students both intellectually and academically, but culturally and socially as well. It is imperative to academically challenge each student based upon their ability in order to meet the set standards. Differentiation allows for students to get the assistance they require while meeting their individual needs. I think it is important for each student to be taught to his or her learning styles. Using high-level and open-ended questions assist in giving students opportunities to engage within their own skills. I also believe that it is essential for teachers to maintain a culturally relevant environment for all students. In doing so, students will feel represented and connected in their education. Content will be meaningful and relevant allowing for student expression and engagement. Maintaining a cultural relevant classroom promotes acceptance and awareness of ones culture in accordance with another. I aim to create a safe and respectful environment, which promotes students to tap into their individual potential while learning the tolerance of others and building necessary social skills. In constructing this community, I aim to value the relationships with students and their families. My passion and experiences with Language Arts translates into my literacy belief. Literacy is having the ability to understand text, media, signs, literature, etc. For all students to have success as literacy learners, I have to instill confidence in them and see growth in each area. To have success as a literary learner, students will need to be fluent and communicative in their reading and writing. I believe that effective readers are strategic. Using different strategies to construct meanings will connect multiple areas of development such as phonemic awareness, word recognition, and a linking of manifold genres. A safe environment fosters literacy learning. When students feel unsafe, their confidence decreases. |
